TEACHERS JOURNEY : Letting Learning Take the Lead - A Teacher's Journey

As parents and educators, we often like things to go exactly as planned. But sometimes, letting go of control can lead to amazing learning experiences. Our job isn't to control every step of our children's learning journey. Instead, we're here to support and guide them as they explore and discover.

Recently, during an art project with two students, our plans took an unexpected turn. We started with a melted crayon art project, where the kids were sorting crayons by color, removing wrappers, and shaving them for the art piece. However, as their interest began to fade, they suggested using rocks to break the crayons instead.

At first, I hesitated. It wasn't part of the original plan, and I worried about the mess and safety. But then, I realized the value in letting them take charge of their learning. So, we took the project outside, and the kids started smashing crayons with rocks.

As they worked, they were excitedly discussing the different colors and shapes the crayons were making. They were experimenting with different amounts of force to see how it affected the crayons' breakage. They were problem-solving and collaborating, all while having fun with the process.

It turned out to be a wonderful learning experience. Even though it wasn't what I had in mind, the kids were engaged and excited. They were learning about cause and effect, exploring different textures, and using their creativity in unexpected ways.

It taught me that sometimes, the best learning happens when we let go of perfectionism and allow for spontaneity. By embracing their ideas and letting them lead the way, we created a safe space for exploration and discovery.
